ME vs. ME: The Only Competition That Matters

I’m back from a well earned break in NYC and looking forward to getting back to business.
I often find there’s a lot to think about when you zoom out and put life on pause. Family, friends, clients, programme design, marketing, sales, the list goes on. Trying to crack the code for everything at once can be overwhelming, and there’s all kinds of reasons why we struggle to balance some things and not others.
Perfection is not an option.
However, there is a way of behaving which gives us a chance of elevating our levels in all of these domains.
‘It was always me vs. the world… until I found it’s me vs. me’
When trying to figure out how to ‘be successful’, or how to ‘make it’ with our goals, how often do we look inwardly for answers?
I’m telling you - not often enough.
We compare with others, we measure, we justify our current status quo. We tell ourselves and others that our struggles are because of external circumstances, or that our progress is only valid if it outshines someone else’s. But the truth is, the only real competition is the one staring back at us in the mirror.
We can waste energy trying to beat the world, or we can focus on surpassing the person we were yesterday.

The Mirror Never Lies
It’s easy to blame the busy schedule, a lack of motivation, or even bad luck - thinking of, or labelling them as a ‘blip’. But if we’re honest, the real obstacles are within. The standards we hold ourselves to. The discipline we choose to apply. The habits we reinforce, day in and day out.
Success doesn’t come from chasing someone else’s numbers - it comes from raising our own. It’s not about their 5K time; it’s about yours. Not their deadlift PB; yours. Did you lift heavier than last month? Did you push past the mental barrier that held you back last week? That’s what matters.
Accountability is a Super Power
No one else can do the work for us. No one else can put in the reps, eat the right foods, or get down to ‘the shred shed’ to train for us. And when we embrace that - when we take full ownership of our progress - we realise just how much control we actually have.
Everything we do is a choice.
Instead of resenting the process, we start respecting it. We start competing with ourselves in the healthiest way possible. Every setback becomes a lesson, every small improvement a victory. But we never get too carried away with either outcome and spin into a positive or negative spiral - we know that simply staying on the track is all that matters. One setback doesn’t de-rail us, one victory doesn’t get us to ‘the finish’.
So what is it you need to do to stay the distance?
Win the Inside Game
After I’ve read ‘The 5 Types of Wealth’ by Sahil Bloom, this latest release from Steve Magness is next on my hit list.
If you’re trying to be stronger, faster, leaner, more resilient - whatever it is - it’s time to stop looking externally for validation. It’s time to stop measuring yourself against others. It’s time to look in the mirror and ask, ‘which stories am I telling myself which are holding me back?’ Or ‘am I better than I was yesterday/last month/last year?’
That’s the only race worth running. And the best part? You control the outcome.
So, what’s the next step? A heavier lift? A quicker pace? A more disciplined mindset? The world isn’t your opponent - you are. And if you commit to winning that competition every single day, success is inevitable.
